As a member of the association of North East and Cumbria Car Clubs (ANECCC), the Association of Scottish Car Clubs and Association of North West Car Clubs (ANWCC), this allows our members to compete in events from the north of Scotland down to the Midlands, including virtually any event in the North of England.
Autosolos are similar with the course defined by pairs numbered, or lettered, cones. These create a sinuous course with no reversing or tight turns. Competing cars have to be road registered. Entry fee for these events are about £30 for a day’s fun.
Production Car Trials (PCTs) are based on a series of “hills” laid out on a grassy slope. From a standing start you have to get your car as far up the course as possible. The further up the fewer penalty points you get. If you get past the last “gate” you get a “clean” sheet or zero points. The courses are changed during the day, and you get perhaps a total of 30 hills on an event. The results are usually worked out by an index of performance, so all the classes have an equal chance. Again entry fees are less than £30.
Classic Car Events There are no precise cut off dates for classics, fortunately. They are generally older cars that people enjoy owning. As a rough guide this would be pre 2000 but there are many great cars made after that date, and we do not turn people away with a car that they love.
The club organises a number of runs for classics each year. Some of these are run on an evening and finish at a pub for sandwiches while others last the full day and go further afield. Usually a couple are over two or three days.
Our major classic event is the Cumbria Classic Weekend which usually takes place on the third weekend of August. The Rose & Thistle Tour heads to both sides of the Border on the Saturday and the Cumbria Classic & Motor Sport Show takes place at Dalemain House on the Sunday. There are 800 cars there, along with club displays, trade stands and autojumble. We also push the motorsport side of the club with autotests displays.
Drive It Day: On the Sunday nearest to Saint George’s Day we participate in the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Club’s “Drive it Day” where all classic and historic vehicles are asked to exercise their right to drive on the highway. We arrange a meet at Dalemain from 11 until 2 with members choosing their own route to get there.
Cars & Coffee meets for all car enthusiasts take place on the second Sunday of each month from March until November at the Motor House from 10 until 12. We also have hundreds of car manuals for sale and an autojumble area where member can donate tools and parts to be sold to fellow members.
Targa Rallies: These are for road going cars, both modern and historic where specials tests are held on private land, very similar to those used in autosolos, marked by pairs of cones. These events can be held on a single venue or on a variety of venues linked by non-competitive road sections. The results are based on the total times and penalties taken during the event for each crew. Again both crew members must have a Motor Sport Uk licence which is free of charge.
Speed Events: These are run over Tarmac course such a circuits or private roads such as drives to country houses. The object is to complete the course as quickly as possible. There are classes for all types of car from standard road cars to powerful single seaters.
Events take place on MSUK licenced venues.
You will need a Motorsport UK Inter Club licence which is around £80, an approved helmet and race suit, plus fireproof gloves.
Marshalling: There is no better way to get involved than by marshalling. Our members marshal on our own events and on other events like stage rallies and race meetings. It’s also a fantastic way to find out about different types of motorsports if you intend to take part in the future.
